I am Bud Mathison. In September 1968, my close friend, Eugene Nonnast and I
decided to head West on a road trip in my 1962 Karmin Ghia.
We did not have a firm plan, just to have and adventure
The photographs were originally take on Ektachrome 64 slide film
We left Thursday August 29, 1968 from Whitewood, South Dakota fairly late in the day and slept
E-Mail to me at the address at the end.

Now September 1, 1968
We drove late into the night on Now August 31 because we did not want to sleep outdoors
in the San Francisco area and all the motels were full.
After we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge there was construction detours and due to fatigue
I got lost and the next thing we knew we were again on the approach to the bridge - going the wrong way!
There was no choice but to pay the toll once again and go on across which meant turning around
at the East end and heading West andpay the toll once again to continue on.
So - We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge three times within minutes. Too dark to see much.
We stopped at the Chamber of Commerce office in Santa Cruz and they arranged housing
Would anyone around there take in a stranger in today's world?
This morning when we left, the fog was too thick to see the Pacific Ocean.
We drove a number of miles South on California Higway 1 before the fog cleared.

We had left California Highway 1 at Cambria and cut across East to Interstate 5 near Bakersfield.

Eugene and I normally spent our nights sleeping outdoors, but spent a nigh here in order to have a shower

Now September 2, 1968 - Labor Day
As we left Labec Lodge, I wanted to go into Los Angles and to Anaheim to see Disneyland.
Eugene was not in favor of driving into Los Angles as he feared Labor Day traffic might be heavy.
He changed his mind when I pointed out the heavy traffic in the Northbound lanes of Interstate 5
leaving Los Angles and almost no traffic in our lanes heading into the city.

Labor Day was a good choice to visit Disneyland. There were only small crowds
and we only had to wait a maximum of a few minutes in line for any ride or concession.
